Personality type en individuality

The ASCENDANT is the astrological symbol for the approach to the world, of the relation with the world and with life. It indicates how a person is present and with that it is characteristic of someone's way of beginning. The Ascendant (= rising at the eastern horizon) depends on the place and time of the event. The point is found in a specific degree of the circle of the zodiac. Starting from the vision of the life of a person as an organism, we can ascertain that in that organism several different processes take place. To begin and approach the environment is one of these processes. Of that process of beginning the Ascendant symbolizes the final condition (that which the person wants to attain) and with that logically also the condition for wanting to begin at all. The sign in which the Ascendant is located indicates that condition. The signs, like CANCER, SCORPIO or LEO, give a general colouring to the Ascendant and to all the phases of the process of beginning that follow. Thus we can distinguish between twelve Ascendants and twelve personality types with which astrology works. Astrologically speaking, the Ascendant is, from without, the most perceptible characteristic of an individual. Personality types are most recognizably symbolized by the Ascendant and its appropriate sign.

The individual effect of patterns, with which we are concerned in the pattern-line, is a movement between the phases of the process, is a shift of perspective. This movement is based upon the transfer of attention to the planet which is most closely connected with the sign from which is departed. In the case of the sign Leo one transfers to the Sun. Via the Sun the person with a Leo Ascendant will land usually in some other sign and in another phase of the process.

The SUN symbolizes the conditions of the process of the realization of the person's individuality. Since, like I said, the Sun usually is situated in another sign, the conditions of this process will usually be quite different from those of the Ascendant of the same person. Moreover, the conditions of the Sun (around which everything turns, in which everything becomes concrescent), other than the Ascendant which is auxiliary to it, are in general more gradually developed. 'Newspaper astrology' gives a representation of the relation between the prevalent tendencies and the Sun in the signs. It does not have the birth-time and -place of individuals at its disposal and cannot personalize the information concerning the Sun by coupling it, via the Ascendant, to one of the twelve personality types. So it is no wonder that usually these texts are not very specific.

The astrologer, interested in the individual within the type, goes far beyond that. He must indeed, in order to go further, have a place and a correct time of birth. But even so, doubts can arise as to the exactitude of the data of birth. The Ascendant is related to the other qualities represented in the birth chart. The Sun, to stick with our example, is situated in a certain phase of the process that belongs to the Leo Ascendant. That is to say that the realization of the personal individuality performs a function in a certain phase of the process of beginning. Also, the Sun and the Ascendant can be mutually related in an aspect. This means that the personal individuality can be expressed outwardly or not. The same applies to all of the other qualities which are symbolized by the planets. These structural properties of birth charts enable the verification of the exactitude of the data of birth. An astrologer can run up against the fact that the given time of birth does not seem to represent the moment at which the baby has entered into the relation with the world and with life. For that is the beginning.

Pattern of beginning LEO:
'First I claim space in my environment to gain supervision'

This starting point can be described as: 'I begin by myself, I want to distinguish myself. From the start I want to gain supervision of the whole situation; if not in reach, forget it, I have no business here! My strength is that I can sum up a situation independently. I am here to have general supervision, in order to take the lead'.
The second condition is that particularization is possible, that the details can be joined and lead to purity (the 1st phase continues with Virgo).

The knowledge which the person with the Leo pattern of beginning is looking for must bring along harmony. They look for balanced knowledge and they doubt if they can stipulate their own route. The sign of Libra is on phase 3 of the acquisition of knowledge. This is the (rose-coloured) sign of war, as it cannot cope with conflict, as it does not solve border incidents. In second instance it has to lead to Scorpio, to essential knowledge.

Let us imagine we could have asked Marilyn Monroe (movie star) what passed through her whenever she started something new. She might have said: 'I want to use this place to show myself, to provoke reactions and thus gain better supervision over the realistic possibilities, and over my professional opportunities. As soon as I start I want to see first if I can survey the relations with the other characters, that helps me better play my own role'.

If we would ask George W. Bush (president USA) how he begins, he might perhaps say: 'I want to be in the center of things myself. Hallo, here I am again. Only from the heart of the business one has an overview of what goes on here and in the background. Only thus can I be in control of the realization of my practical ideal and stipulate my own route nicely'.

Pablo Picasso (visual artist) could have answered such a question as: 'Naturally, in all honesty I must admit that the way in which I work makes me vulnerable. I think that my strength lies exactly there. I just see whatever comes of it; if only I can tackle the form in my own unscrupulous way'.

The moment of birth ...

The information regarding the time of birth of George W. Bush (version A: New Haven CT, 6 juli 1946, 7:26h.) comes from the hospital where his birth took place. It does happen that the foetus shortly before the moment of birth has already secluded itself from the mother's blood supply, has been existing independently for some time and perhaps has been trying to breath or starts breathing only after birth. The span of time between independency and breathing can rise to as much as twenty minutes. As the Ascendant indicates the relation with the world and with life I think it is important, when we ascertain a starting point in time, to look for the moment of independent existence.
If it is true that George W. Bush started breathing independently at a later moment, for instance 19 minutes later, then his birth chart looks different (alternative version B: New Haven CT, 6 juli 1946, 7:45h). [ note ]. Then that birth chart describes a different event with a different character. We can let both charts speak for themselves.

If this is George W. Bush, then he moves in a slightly different way within his Leo pattern of beginning. His appearance is quite different because the first phase is organized differently. Phase:
  1. I begin myself, I want to distinguish myself. From the start I want to gain supervision of the whole situation; if not in reach, forget it, I have no business here. My strength is that I can sum up a situation independently. I am here to gain general supervision, in order to take the lead.
    The second condition is that particularization is possible, that the details can be joined and lead to purity.
  2. I consult my frame of reference in an exact, pure, detailed manner, with attention to detail. I love small things. I can't stand sloppiness when posessions or money are concerned.
    The second condition is LIBRA, that I have to be able to keep open an alternative route, that the balance can be found.
  3. My knowledge is twofold, in balance; I pick up knowledge in a harmonious way. I am uncertain about my acquaintances. I have two sorts of acquaintances. My acquaintances are harmonious, artistic. I associate with my acquaintances in a harmonious way. My own way is harmonic, I keep an alternative route open.
    The final condition is that I penetrate into the heart of the matter and that it is useful in practice.
  4. I look for the essence of security, I am a practical businessman. No wavering, no uncertainty, everything very simple where security and enterprise are concerned. I am very vulnerable at this point though.
    The ultimate condition is that I can be idealistic, that I can believe in my venture.
  5. My true core is somebody who is looking for a goal, something I can believe in, an ideal. I believe in myself. I am my own goal.
    The second condition is that the goal, my ideal, is feasible, that I can be sure of it. At the end I have to be able to be sure of myself, to be able to work alone and independently.

I like to work alone and independently, I prefer to be responsible for (my own bit of) my job. I take on only the work that I can manage. I like to know whether it is feasible. I take care for my body seriously.
    The final condition is AQUARIUS: that the job is exceptional, that there is something unique to be experienced.
  7. I cooperate on the basis of the Aquarian principles, with people which I recognize as my equals. I can begin independently etcetera, my equals ought to be able to start independently and sum up the situation as well. Why?
    In order to be able to end in a fishy way. If the other understands it, has overall supervision, I can leave it to him, let things take their course. It will end well, all by itself.
  8. The other person's frame of reference is limitless, is a chaos. I find modifications unfathomable, leading to chaos. I transform by letting go, by letting in chaos. I delight in things in a limitless manner.
    The final condition is that it should lead to new initiatives, to practical new things.
  9. My supplement has to have practical, ready knowledge at his disposal. I have vigorous, practical goals. I work resolutely on my goals. I develop my ideals in an active, practical manner.
    Second condition is that I should be able to make my ideals productive at the end, to finally realize them.
  10. Initially I wait and see as regards the realization of my goal, but once I am really behind it I can't be stopped. Initially I wait and see what the other takes on. Once I am convinced, my scepsis turns into unstoppable enthusiasm. I am socially involved in an initially expectant manner. When I have decided I work toward my goal doggedly.
    The final condition is that the other brings in knowledge and I can collect more knowledge.
  11. My social network is focused on communication and transmission. My friends must be GEMINI, must have knowledge of themselves, be able to put things in perspective. From the start I demand loyalty from the other so they must be able to put things in perspective, otherwise they can't remain loyal. I want to have a broad network, all sorts of people.
    The condition is however that it all ends in an emotional manner, it has to carry commitment, not detachment.
  12. My supplement's work is serving, caring, motherly. I finish things in an emotional way. I let go in a caring manner. But from everything I let go at least something must remain.
    Finally I'll keep the termination in my own hands, I need nobody to do that for me, I prefer to find my own dignified solutions.
